Vacation, Packed with Play
Sunscreen, check. Swimsuits and extra outfits, check. Diapers, double check. Snacks, tucked into every pocket of the diaper bag.
Somewhere between remembering the toothbrushes and finding everyone’s favorite stuffed animal, you might find yourself wondering…
What should we bring to keep the kids entertained? Toys? Books? Everything?
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to pack your entire playroom.
Whether you’re headed to the beach, the mountains, Grandma’s house, or somewhere in between, family vacations are filled with opportunities for children to learn, imagine, and explore.
While it’s tempting to fill every corner of the suitcase with toys and activities, the truth is that a few thoughtfully chosen items can inspire hours of meaningful play. The best travel toys aren’t always the biggest or the loudest—they’re the ones that leave room for creativity, curiosity, and connection.
Simple is more
Cheesy, we know, but it actually makes a lot of sense here. Parents often think they need to pack more to keep kids entertained. After all, the last thing any parent wants to hear is, “I’m bored!” But children don’t need a suitcase overflowing with toys to stay engaged. In fact, bringing fewer, open-ended toys often leads to richer, more meaningful play.
Unlike toys with lights, sounds, or a single purpose, open-ended toys invite children to become the storytellers, the builders, the explorers, and the problem-solvers. A handful of toy dinosaurs can roam a sandy beach in the morning and protect a pillow fort in the hotel room that afternoon. A stack of magnetic tiles can become a castle, a bridge, or even a runway for toy airplanes. The possibilities change with every new environment.
Vacation also offers something children don’t always have at home: uninterrupted time. Without the usual rush of school, errands, and busy schedules, children have more opportunities to slow down, notice the world around them, and let their imaginations take the lead. The simplest toys often pair best with those moments because they leave room for creativity instead of directing it.
When you pack toys that encourage imagination instead of replacing it, you’re making room for something even more valuable—shared experiences, joyful discoveries, and learning that travels with you.
So what do you pack? Let’s look at some categories that can help us narrow down our options based on each little one’s personality or interests. Feel free to use this as a base board and go with your gut when it comes to your family!
The Creativity Corner
- Crayons
- Water Wow books
- Blank sketchbook
Looking for something to cozy up with, either in the car or at a restaurant or even while winding down after a day of adventure? Think crayons, water wow books, sticker books or a blank sketchbook. Water Wow books can be great for those road trips or restaurants. No mess, all the fun. Winding down after a day full of adventure? Combine colored pencils or crayons with a blank sketchbook and ask your little one to draw their favorite part about their day. You’d be amazed at what the world looks like from their perspective and if you’re just as creative as your little one, you can turn their art into a postcard keepsake from that vacation.
The Little Explorer Kit
- Magnifying glass
- Travel BINGO
- Binoculars
- Nature scavenger hunt printable
Every beach, campground, and hiking trail becomes a classroom when little explorers are leading the way. For this explorer, think about packing a magnifying glass or little binoculars. If you want to blend the creative with the explorer, try a nature themed bingo sheet, a scavenger hunt printable, or coloring book themed with your location. With these little explorers, you never know what their next adventure will look like or sound like! A stick picked up on a nature trail might become a magic wand, a fishing pole, or the world’s most important dinosaur bone. Children don’t just see objects—they see possibilities.
The Imagination Bag
- Animal figures
- Toys dinos
- Finger puppets
- Small dolls
Speaking of imagination- have you ever had your hotel room turn into a jungle? A blanket can become a pirate ship. A handful of toys can spark hours of storytelling. A few animal figures might turn into “rescue all the farm animals from the quick sand and return them to their rightful home, safe and sound.” Toy dinosaurs might turn into “Oh no, we need to save the city from the dinosaurs!” Finger puppets in the car can easily turn into “can you count how many cars [puppet] hops over?” Children don’t just see objects—they see possibilities. And if we’re willing to slow down and let our imaginations wander with them, the adventures will never end.
The Builder Box
- Magnetic tiles
- Stacking cups
- Small building blocks
Sometimes, the weather isn’t great. Or you finally have a flat surface and your own space to get creative. Or your grandma is secretly the stacking cup champion. That’s when our builder buddies shine! Think magnetic tiles, stacking cups, building blocks – anything to encourage your little one to get inspired and build something great.
The Family Fun Pouch
- Deck of cards
- Dice
- Conversation cards
Or, Instead of another toy… Suggest games like:
- I Spy
- Color hunts
- Counting bridges
- Finding letters on signs
- Silly storytelling
Because sometimes, the best entertainment is just being together.
Here’s a little secret:
Your child probably won’t remember every toy you packed. They’ll remember collecting seashells with you. Building a blanket fort in the hotel room. Watching airplanes through the airport windows. Making up stories on a long car ride. Sometimes the best “toy” on vacation is simply having the time and space to play together.
At Stomp and Play, we believe learning doesn’t stop when school lets out or when vacation begins. It simply finds a new place to grow.
When you’re packing for vacation, it’s easy to focus on everything your child might need. But some of the most meaningful moments don’t come from a suitcase at all. The best travel toys aren’t the ones that do all the entertaining. They’re the ones that leave room for imagination.
So this summer, pack the essentials, but leave a little room for wonder. Make space for muddy shoes, sandy pockets, and curious questions. And remember— the best vacations are the ones where the learning travels right alongside you.
